As Black History Month approaches, esteemed black leaders, activists, athletes, artists, and so many more are highlighted. It serves as an opportunity to take a step back and look at the history and future of our beloved sport through the lens of black people. First, a bit about myself. My name is Joshua Rafferty, and I’m an economics student and rower at Loyola University Maryland.

Finding Balance by Philip Doyle
Let me introduce myself, my name is Philip Doyle, a 30-year-old doctor, and rower. For the past five years I’ve been qualified in the NHS and have been on the Irish National Squad for the same amount of time. I have been dipping in and out of both rowing and medicine, but never truly leaving one behind. I want to share a bit of how 2018/19 went for me and how this period was, in retrospect, one of the most difficult times for me that required balance and skills I was unaware I was utilising at the time.

Veterans Day Spotlight: Patrick Ward
Team JL Ambassador, Patrick Ward is a disabled United States Navy Veteran, injured while on Active Duty. He underwent 52 surgeries and the amputation of his right leg above the knee racking up a total of more than 2 years in the hospital. He has trained at the Miami Beach Rowing Club for the last 5 years, and currently holds Men’s PR2 World Records in multiple categories. In honor of Veterans Day 2022, we sat down with Pat to learn more about his journey from his high school dreams of being a rower, to becoming a PR2 athlete.

Meet Andrew Mangan at HOCR 2022
This year at Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston, US Para National Team athlete Andrew Mangan will be at the JL Racing tent on Saturday, October 22nd. Stop by the JL tent between 10:00am-11:00am for a meet and greet, and to learn about High Fives Foundation - the nonprofit that helped Andrew buy an adaptive PR1 single to train in.
Row for the Cure 2022 Pre-Order Store
The Row for the Cure 2023 Pre-Order Store is open from October 6-October 20 in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. 20% of all net sales from this pre-order store will be donated to the Susan G. Komen Foundation on behalf of the Row for the Cure organization. Rowers are the perfect bunch to support our community as we battle to win the fight against breast cancer. Ultimately, that is why we come together each year. Not only as competitors but as a rowing community. One goal: to kick cancer, together!
