Mother's Day 2023

Mother's Day 2023

Moms play a big part in the rowing world: we have women who show their strength as mothers and on the water as part of a masters team; we have moms who coach not only their kids, but also a rowing team; and of course moms who support their children who row/cox! In honor of Mother's Day, we sat down with three of our Team JL Ambassadors who are all moms who row! Read about how their training has evolved pre-pregnancy, during pregnancy, and post-pregnancy, how rowing has helped them as moms, and what they are most proud of as moms.

Summer Rowing Camp Kit

Summer Rowing Camp Kit

For rowers, summer is a time where you can either take a break, or you can continue training and become faster. Many young rowers will opt for summer rowing camps so that they can continue to develop their technical skills, and keep up their fitness over the summer. Whether you are attending a local rowing camp, or going to an out-of-town camp, we've compiled a list of what you can pack in your rowing camp kit so that you are prepared to train!
4 Essentials For Rowers

4 Essentials For Rowers

JL Racing sent me over a nice box of gear this year to try and give honest feedback on. I had previously had JL gear through their provision of the national team gear in Ireland in 2018 and also when I joined Team JL 2018 in my last year of university rowing. I was excited as I was still to this day wearing their JL Racing t-shirts day to day as I loved the quality and how well they washed and could be used over and over. They also sat on my shoulders and arms really nicely, which was a bonus for the ego. Looking good in clothes can never be a bad thing. I have compiled my must-haves for a rowing session and why.

GPRF 15th Annual Row to the Future Benefit Breakfast

GPRF 15th Annual Row to the Future Benefit Breakfast

With more than 38,000 youth participating annually in their programs, the George Pocock Rowing Foundation is changing the way young people find, start, and stay rowing, regardless of circumstance. With your support, they are creating an inclusive rowing community, accessible for all. The GPRF partners with multiple boathouses and public school districts in the Pacific Northwest and beyond with that goal in mind.

Team Spotlight: Sammamish Rowing Association

Usually a rowing club starts with some rowers and a coach, then some boats and oars, and eventually a boathouse. But with SRA, the boathouse came first. In 1994, Hod Fowler, a former collegiate rower, learned of an old boathouse in Marymoor Park. The boathouse was originally built by the Overlake School on the site of a former sewage-treatment plant. Overlake later abandoned the building, and Fowler discovered it was weeks away from being demolished as part of a toxic-site cleanup project in Marymoor Park.
Team JL Spotlight: Isabel Stevens

Team JL Spotlight: Isabel Stevens

We head over to La Salle University in Pennsylvania today to meet Isabel Stevens, a Team JL Ambassador and a sophomore on the rowing team at La Salle University. Isabel's favorite pre-practice snack is a Go-Go Squeez Apple Cinnamon and a honey stick, and her favorite post-practice snack is a gluten free bagel with strawberry cream cheese and green tea. She loves rowing in a 1x, but if she's rowing sweep, you'll usually find her on starboard!
Erg Warmup With Philip Doyle

Erg Warmup With Philip Doyle

Warming up before a workout is crucial to get yourself ready to perform at your best, and avoid injury. Warming up increases your heart rate and therefore your blood flow. This enables more oxygen to reach your muscles. A warmup also activates and primes the connections between your nerve and muscles, which improves the efficiency of movement. So, how do you get ready for an erg workout or rowing on the water? Follow along with Philip Doyle, as he takes us through his warmup on the erg!
Mobility Session With Philip Doyle

Mobility Session With Philip Doyle

Everyone can use more mobility and stretching in their routines. Stretching has many benefits, such as it improves your performance, decreases risk of injury, increases mobility and full range of motion, and more. Sometimes it is difficult to dedicate the proper time to stretching before and after workouts, but we've made it easy with a pre-workout routine from Philip Doyle that you can follow along with before your next row!
Athlete Spotlight: AJ Collins

Athlete Spotlight: AJ Collins

Meet AJ, a sophomore who rows starboard on Purdue Crew. He is studying to become a mechanical engineer, but really enjoys being on the team, since it allows him to dedicate himself to something bigger than himself. Being a student-athlete helps push him to be more effective and productive in everything that he does. AJ's favorite pre-practice snack is a plain bagel smothered in peanut butter, and after practice, you'll find him eating a banana and chocolate milk.

Historic Women Creating Spaces for Women to Excel

It’s on the shoulders of these trailblazers that we stand today, personally I am indescribably grateful for their contributions to our programs and professions. Their resiliency to press forward despite glass ceilings, patriarchal precedent, and barriers to equality enabled them to painfully carve out the spaces that we have today in male-dominated environments like athletics and high-level professional environments.
Didn't compete in varsity? It's not too late for you, Masters!

Didn't compete in varsity? It's not too late for you, Masters!

This blog post is dedicated to people who discovered rowing later in life at the masters level, and who haven't raced in school or college. Many masters are rowing in clubs for leisure/exercise more than to compete and it's sometimes hard to train for competitions when the rest of the team is not in this mindset. This blog post features quotes from two JL ambassadors sharing their advice with us
